Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie Review
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie Overview
Power up with six incredible teens who out-maneuver and defeat evil everywhere as the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger, But this time the Power Rangers may have met their match, when they face off with the most sinister monster the galaxy has ever seen.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie Specifications
They skydive, they kickbox, they travel through space. Is there anything these crayon-colored teens can't do? The answer seems a resounding "no," until some construction workers unwittingly open a manhole cover and loose Ivan Ooze upon Angel Grove. Although incarcerated in his egglike tomb for 6,000 years, Ooze gets right to work at that world domination thing. First up: Strip those eager teens of their morphin uniforms and associated powers and send their leader Zordon to his crystalline deathbed. There's nothing to do but head for a distant planet to meet up with a bikini-clad warrior babe who imparts ancient wisdom and power. Meanwhile, Ooze has been turning parents into zombies who craft giant metallic insects--all the better to take over the world with. This 90-minute film features some cast changes from the Fox television series, as well as better special effects and extended fight scenes, which account for the PG rating. Parents must weigh in for themselves on the famous violent-influence-or-not question. Although, like anything else, what seemed violent in 1995 may seem a bit tame today. Ages 5 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Raymond Briggs' The Snowman
Raymond Briggs' The Snowman Review
Raymond Briggs' The Snowman Overview
An Academy Award Nominee (Best Animated Short Film, 1982), this delightful animation weaves a spell of magical enchantment as a young boy's snowman comes to life and escorts him on a magical flying visit to the North Pole. Absolutely superlative family enjoyment.
Raymond Briggs' The Snowman Specifications
This charming British animated short film (it's just 23 minutes long) is a 1982 production of London's Channel 4, based on the classic children's book by Raymond Briggs and crafted with a colored-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn illustrations. Small children should be entranced by the story of a small boy in rural England whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequence based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do English country dances. This is one of the very few Christmas tapes on the market that really deserves to be a holiday perennial, a gentle fable of friendship and the power of imagination. --David Chute

The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition
The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition Review
The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition Overview
They're irreverent, irrepressible, and downright irresistible. They're the Muppets! -- starring in their first full-length movie. See how their meteoric rise to fame and fortune began: with a rainbow, a song . . . and a Frog. After a fateful meeting with a big-time talent agent, Kermit the Frog heads for Hollywood dreaming of showbiz. Along the way, Fozzie Bear, the Great Gonzo, and the dazzling Miss Piggy join him in hopes of becoming film stars too. But all bets are off when Kermit falls into the clutches of Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), a fast-food mogul seeking to promote his French-fried frog-leg franchise! Featuring Oscar(R)-nominated music (1980, Best Original Song "The Rainbow Connection," Best Original Score) and side-splitting appearances by some of the biggest names on the silver screen -- including Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Orson Welles, and more! –-this fully restored and remastered 50th Anniversary Edition of THE MUPPET MOVIE is a critically acclaimed comedy classic your family will treasure for all time. The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition Specifications
Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! --Sean Axmaker

Joe Kidd [VHS]
Joe Kidd [VHS] Review
Joe Kidd [VHS] Overview
Clint Eastwood's stardom was supernova, thanks to Dirty Harry; John Sturges, the man behind The Magnificent Seven and a dozen other memorably leathery Westerns, was directing; and Elmore Leonard was the screenwriter. It just goes to show. Joe Kidd is a muddle and a drag, the shoddiest Eastwood vehicle since Rowdy Yates trod in his last cow flop. Kidd, first seen as a duded-up drunk sleeping one off in jail, is supposed to be a horse rancher and an expert tracker--just the fellow a rapacious land-grabber (Robert Duvall committing lazy villainy) needs to chase down the uppity Latino (John Saxon) who's trying to reclaim the grabbed land for its rightful owners. Neither the characters nor the overland pursuit makes any sense, thanks to chasms in the continuity and no direction to speak of. An absurdly arbitrary assault-by-locomotive provides the climax; as Eastwood observed, "Jesus, anything at this point--let's end it." --Richard T. Jameson

Toy Story (10th Anniversary Edition)
Toy Story (10th Anniversary Edition) Review
Toy Story (10th Anniversary Edition) Overview
Experience a hilarious fantasy about the lives toys lead when they're left alone. Woody (Tom Hanks), an old-fashioned cowboy doll, is Andy's favorite. But when Andy gets Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) for his birthday, the flashy new space hero takes Andy's room by storm! Their rivalry leaves them lost with a toy's worst nightmare -- Sid, the toy-torturing boy next door. Woody and Buzz must work together to escape, realizing along the way that they've got a friend ... in each other! Now, in a magnificent special edition, TOY STORY shines even brighter. With an all-new enhanced picture and a spectacular home theater mix as well as exclusive bonus features, including deleted scenes and a retrospective special with director John Lasseter, this modern classic is one you'll enjoy to infinity and beyond.
Toy Story (10th Anniversary Edition) Specifications
There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.
The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more. Two keen retrospectives are new, one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the film's impact. The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips. There's a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets. Missing (besides the second film, which will be released separately) is the effects- and music-only tracks. Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5.1 track. The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture, but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it. Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer, both versions are eye-popping. A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box.
Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

The Magic School Bus - The Busasaurus [VHS] Review
The Magic School Bus - The Busasaurus [VHS] Overview
A visit to a dinosaur dig turns exciting when the Magic School Bus becomes a time machine that takes Ms. Frizzle's class back 67 million years, to the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. There, they must put aside their prejudices and preconceptions about dinosaurs, as they investigate which are dangerous carnivores, and which are herbivores. By noting their observations in their science journals, the class classifies dinosaurs according to their diets. An encounter with a T-rex concludes the journey. They realize that dinosaurs come in all shapes and sizes, and use the scientific methods of recording data and hypothesizing to reach their conclusions. They also discover how scientists today use evidence such as teeth to tell which dinosaurs ate what. A female paleontologist answers their questions at the end, explaining which part of the journey was fact, and which was speculation. Kids will learn how scientists work, as they enjoy this exciting adventure in time travel. --Elisabeth Keating

Barney - Barney's Super Singing Circus Review
Barney - Barney's Super Singing Circus Overview
Barney's Super-dee-duper™ Singing Circus has arrived! And it's got everything children want to see: a marching band (led by Baby Bop ™), a carful of silly clowns, a flying squirrel (Scooter McNutty) on a trapeze, prancing ponies, a lion tamer, whistling wiener-dogs, a strongman that can lift Ringmaster Barney high over his head and more. And you'll never guess what BJ ™ is planning for the big finale! It's big fun under the big top for Barney™ and ALL his friends when this circus comes to town!
Barney - Barney's Super Singing Circus Specifications
The circus is coming to town, and when Barney and his friends learn that Emily has never seen a circus and won't be able to attend, they put one on especially for her. After some research at the local library, Barney and his five friends spread out their parachute and use their imagination to magically transform it into a big-top tent complete with live audience. Barney presides as ringmaster, and his circus features a kids' marching band, a car full of clowns, a lion tamer act, Leonard the tap-dancing duck, and much more. Baby Bop, Barney's human friends, a few circus jugglers and clowns, and Scooter the squirrel figure prominently throughout the show. Just wait until you see BJ the Magnificent's big, big act--if his surprise ever arrives, that is. There's lots of spirited singing, including "Yankee Doodle," "I'm Brushing My Teeth," "When the Circus Comes to Town," and "Boom, Boom, Ain't It Nice to Be Crazy." Concepts stressed include cooperation, how work yields big fun, the importance of exercise and good dental hygiene, and the idea that any day can be special if you share it with friends. Barney is an all-time favorite of most kids ages 1 to 6, and this 50-minute video certainly won't disappoint them. --Tami Horiuchi

Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie Overview
Features include:
•MPAA Rating: G
•Format: DVD
•Runtime: 82 minutes
Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie Specifications
Parents seeking kid-friendly, Christian entertainment can be comfortable letting their kids watch Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, which turns the characters from the biblical story of Jonah into a bunch of talking cucumbers, asparagus, peas, and other vegetables. When God instructs the prophet Jonah to go to the wicked city of Ninevah to spread His word, Jonah balks and tries to flee by ship--only to end up in the belly of a whale. When he finally consents to go to Ninevah, things don't turn out quite the way he expects. The VeggieTales team uses computer animation and upbeat musical numbers to express Christian themes, but they do so without being painfully didactic. The animation (and the humor) isn't as sophisticated as that in Toy Story or Shrek, and kids may find some elements of the story confusing, but this may provide an opportunity for parents and kids to discuss values. --Bret Fetzer

My Flesh and Blood Overview
Winner of the Audience and Director’s Awards at the Sundance Film Festival, the deeply affecting MY FLESH AND BLOOD follows one remarkable family’s most tumultuous year as it confronts a litany of daily routines, celebrates life’s small pleasures, and copes with major crises. Who says you can’t choose your family? "I think when I found that I could survive raising four kids, that it wasn’t that far of a leap to add another one," says Susan Tom of Fairfield, California, who has done more than just that, adopting 11 special needs children. For a single mother who receives only limited help from the state, Susan gives her kids love, hope, and as close to a normal childhood has possible. Her limits are tested, however, when her angry teenage son threatens one of his siblings. And after another child’s condition becomes erratic, the entire family learns that living for the moment is the keystone to happiness. Tenderly directed by Jonathan Karsh, MY FLESH AND BLOOD presents a family portrait like no other--a bittersweet and unforgettable experience filled with unexpected humor, stirring pathos, and an optimistic view towards morality.

Mystery!: Inspector Lewis Overview
MYSTERY! presents a gripping detective drama featuring echoes of the past, as Kevin Whately returns as Robbie Lewis, former sidekick to the legendary Inspector Morse. Inspector Lewis is an intelligent contemporary crime story set once again against the beautiful backdrop of Oxford, England. Following a family tragedy, Inspector Robert Lewis has been on a two-year assignment in the British Virgin Islands. Now he's back in the familiar territory of the English university city - five years after the death of his long-time police partner Morse. Teamed up with the much younger Detective Sergeant James Hathaway (Laurence Fox; Gosford Park, Island At War), Lewis doesn't even make it home from the airport before he is pulled onto a murder scene. As Lewis and Hathaway join forces to investigate the death of American college student Regan Peverill (Sophie Winkleman), they are led to another student, Danny Griffon (Charlie Cox; Casanova), a man with a family secret whose previous brush with the law was investigated by a certain Inspector Morse.
Mystery!: Inspector Lewis Specifications
Inspector Lewis is a very satisfying follow-up to the legacy of Inspector Morse, the late investigator (played by John Thaw, who died in 2002) beloved by many a fan of British television mysteries. Lewis (Kevin Whatley) was Morse's right-hand sergeant. Following the elder sleuth's death, Lewis was promoted but then faced the sudden and unexpected loss of his wife. Inspector Lewis catches up with him upon his jet-lagged return from a two-year assignment in the British Virgin Islands. Destined to be put out to pasture as an instructor at detective school, Lewis instead gets caught up in a murder case that overlaps with an old, strangely yet apparently unresolved investigation by Morse. Joined by a new character, Detective Sergeant James Hathaway (Laurence Fox), Lewis looks into the murder of a brilliant American student at Oxford and her connection to the survivors of a racing legend killed, years before, under questionable circumstances. A coffee-stained, cryptic note in Morse's hand could provide a valuable clue, but fans of Morse holding any doubts about a possible new series built around Lewis will see this determined and hugely likable fellow come into his own. Lewis's emerging partnership with Hathaway is one of the real delights of this drama. The younger man, a former seminarian, and Lewis, who lost religious faith following his family tragedy, manage to find some ground for mutual respect and appreciation. --Tom Keogh

Wonder Showzen - Season 1 Specifications
Every episode of the delightfully subversive kids' show parody, Wonder Showzen begins with a garish warning banner that reads in part, "If you allow a child to view this, you are a bad parent or guardian." They're not kidding. The sentiment is bolstered when the words to the theme song ends with the lyric, "change the channel for kids." That said, this may be the most bizarrely hilarious kids show an adult has ever watched. Patterned after the Sesame Street model of puppet characters interacting with real kids, it's rude, offensive, terribly distasteful, and savagely funny. MTV2 bravely aired this first season in 2005, and even ordered up more for at least one more season. The main puppet, Chauncey, has his hands full with the precocious children who berate and sometimes just plain beat him for the fun of it. Other crudely made (and crudely voiced) puppets include a recently out of re-hab Letter N, a disgusting worm, and a multi-eyed newscaster who frequently breaks in with shocking news bulletins. One episode features a Jewish J and Arabic 8, whose forbidden love is shown in all its pornographic puppet glory. The show is also interspersed with old archival footage, some of it funny, some of it repulsive, usually in a segment called "Funny, Not Funny" in which kids call out their personal judgment of images such as happy clowns juxtaposed with documentary footage from a '50s-era slaughterhouse. Another distressingly humorous segment is "Beat Kids!", in which real kids are sent out on the streets of New York to ask wildly age-inappropriate questions of passersby (one cute little girl on Wall Street coyly inquires, "Who did you exploit today?"). But remember, this show is not for kids, only adults who have a lot of childhood repression to exhume through tears of gross-out laughter.--Ted Fry

Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World (Three-Disc 3D Blu-ray / Blu-ray / DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Overview
As happens with many creative people, director Robert Rodriguez became very interested in making things for kids when he started having children of his own. Thanks to his blessed events we were blessed with the delightfully zany entertainment of Spy Kids in 2001, about a brother and sister who join their parents in the family business of being international superspies. Rodriguez spruced up his tall tale with lots of color, pizzazz, and bold, broad strokes of family-friendly intrigue, plus all the outlandish gadgets that befit an inventive mind and technologically inspired spirit like the one that made him such a dynamic filmmaker to begin with. It didn't hurt that he had Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino on board as the spy parents, along with two wonderfully talented child stars (Alexa Vega and Darryl Sabara) as their pint-size secret agent progeny. After two sequels and 10 years, Rodriguez's reinvigorated resurrection of the franchise relies on a new family with oblique ties to the original (only Vega and Sabara return, as full-grown, full-fledged spies) and does a suitably energetic job of making zippy fun for the fourth-grade crowd. Others are certainly welcome to enjoy the excitement, so long as they have a special affinity for fart, poop, and vomit jokes mixed with bold, pop-art production design, kid-approved techno gadgets, and special effects that play up the slapstick nature of the original Spy Kids ethos. Jessica Alba is the spy mom this time, a job she's kept hidden from her TV journalist husband (Joel McHale) and step-kids Rebecca and Cecil Wilson (Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook). The secret doesn't last long, of course, and the two kids, along with her bubbly one-year-old daughter (who supplies most of the poop and vomit), join in the fight against the malevolent Tick Tock and his mysterious boss Time Keeper. These wacky villains can manipulate time and plan on creating some sort of apocalyptic meltdown based on their uniquely nasty ability. That's about the best description one can give; the plot is extremely convoluted, but it's pretty much superfluous anyway. The point of the show is to watch in delighted glee as the kids play with all the cool toys, the good grownups triumph, and the director makes juvenile poetry using slapdash digital effects and nonstop, gentle potty humor to amuse his core audience of enchanted children. Jeremy Piven has fun playing multiple roles and Ricky Gervais practically steals the movie (for the adults, at least) with his riffing banter giving voice to a robot dog in service of the spying Wilson family. Though it's a far cry from the original wit and offhand originality of his first Spy Kids adventure, this fourth installment is ample proof that Rodriguez is keeping up with what kids want in throwaway entertainment and has the technical skill to make the visuals pop off the screen to fill in any gaps of logic or boredom. --Ted Fry
